MINNEAPOLIS - From studying abroad to staying local and training, working, and studying, the defending national champion Gopher women's hockey team has kept busy this summer.
After the national champion recognition quieted down and the spring classes wrapped up, the Gophers took advantage of summertime to recharge and begin preparing for the 2016-17 season. Catch up on GopherSports.com's second installment of how the 2016 national champions spent their summer.
Lindsay Agnew: This summer I spent a lot of time with my family and friends and did a lot of training for the upcoming season as well. At the end of July, I went to Florida for a week where I played some golf and went to the beach. I just returned home from Calgary as I was there for two and a half weeks with the Canadian National Development Team. I can't wait to be a Gopher!
Sidney Peters: This summer I spent a lot of time at the lake with my family and dogs. I worked in Haiti as an EMT, coached hockey up in northern Minnesota, and trained for the upcoming season. It's been a great break, but I am certainly ready for hockey to start up again!
Sydney Baldwin: Over the summer, I was busy studying abroad in London for three and a half weeks; upon my return in early June I spent my time taking two classes, working, playing hockey, staying active and enjoying my time at the cabin on the weekends. I took a few trips, making it to three different countries and am ending the summer with a hiking trip in Vancouver. I'm very much looking forward to the start of school year and especially getting back on the ice with my fellow Gophers!
Sarah Potomak: I spent this summer with my family, training, and school. My brother got married this summer, which was really exciting for my family and I. I also took a class on Child Psychology online, which took up a lot of my summer. I spent every day training and preparing for the upcoming season. In August, I had a Team Canada camp and was selected to play in the series vs. the USA, which was also a highlight. I'm looking forward to getting back with the girls!
Cara Piazza: I spent most of my summer at home in Illinois. It was nice getting to spend time with my family, but I'm excited to head back to school. I took two online classes, went on vacation to Idaho, and went to two camps. One was a Christian athlete camp and the other was August Fest for USA hockey. Those were definitely the highlights of my summer because of the cool experiences and people I met.
Kelly Pannek: I started off the summer with a fun study abroad experience in Australia with Kelsey Cline. We were there for two weeks exploring Sydney and Brisbane and learning about international business. When we got back, I continued my internship with Wells Fargo Advisors where I help with financial portfolios and other tasks. Along with my internship, I took a summer class and trained. When I wasn't doing one of those three things I was either hanging out with friends, going to cabins, or golfing. I finished my summer with two weeks with USA Hockey in Lake Placid and Calgary as a member of the U22 team with some fellow Gophers.
Alex Woken: My summer was filled with taking a couple classes at the U while also working out and skating with some teammates. I also spent time on the lake with friends as well as golfing and hanging out with my family.
Dani Cameranesi: This summer I fortunately didn't have any summer classes, so I got to spend the majority of my summer with my family and friends. I went up north as much as possible, and I had a blast fishing (I always catch the biggest fish!). Other than that, I spent my summer training here at the U. I'm glad to be back for my final year!
