Day 2 Singles Draws
The University of Minnesota women's tennis team continued to play strong today, the second day of the Gopher Invitational at Baseline Tennis Center.
Doubles
The maroon and gold added another doubles draw win with Maja Vujic and Camila Vargas Gomez today. They won their first match 6-3 over the University of North Dakota then won the final 6-1 over the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.
Tina Kreinis and Annemarie Emme teamed up again to win their first match 6-1 over Northern Iowa. The duo fell in the final match of the draw 6-2 to San Jose State.
Mehvish Safdar and Cammy Frei started off strong with a 6-3 win over South Dakota State in their first match but then fell in the final match of the draw 6-2.
Caroline Ryba and Karyna Bihel fell in their first match 6-2 and then fell in their second match 6-3. Freshman Kalyssa Hall teamed up with Isabella Franks from Marquette for one match which they won 6-1.
Singles
Safdar fell in her first singles match of the day 6-7, 6-1, 7-10 to Ellie Burns of South Dakota. She bounced back with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Iasmin Rosa of South Dakota State University in the consolation rorund.
Kreinis advanced to the semifinals after winning her first match 6-1, 6-1 then her second match in a tough 4-6, 6-0, 10-5 win. Caroline Ryba kicked off her singles play by beating Ella Hassall of the University of North Dakota 6-0, 6-2. She then went on to beat Ani Gogvadze of Eastern Michigan 6-1, 6-2 to go to the semifinals.
Senior captain Vujic fell in her first match to Samantha Budai 7-5, 6-3 but came back with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Eszter Zador of the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Emme won her first match 6-0, 7-5 but dropped the next match 6-0, 6-4.
Freshman Karyna Bihel took her first match 7-6, 6-0 over Marie Mayerova of Eastern Michigan. She then fell to Regina Espindola of Iowa State 7-6(8-6), 6-2.
Vargas Gomez defeated Mimi Yunker of North Dakota 6-0, 6-1 but lost her second match to Miyo Kobayashi of San Jose State 6-3, 6-4.
Tomorrow will feature a Gopher showdown of Emme versus Vargas Gomez in Flight B. The winner will have a chance to play Bihel if she advances.
Kalyssa Hall went the distance with a 7-6, 4-6, 10-3 win over Barbora Kollarova of the University of South Dakota. She then fell in the quarterfinals 6-4, 6-1 to Andrea Martinovska of Eastern Michigan.
Fellow freshman Cammy Frei won her first match 6-4, 7-5 but also fell in the quarterfinals 6-3, 3-6, 10-4.
The Gophers will return to Baseline tomorrow for day three of the Gopher Invite. Two round of will begin at 9 a.m. then one round of singles will start at 11 a.m.
