Minnesota Heads to Stanford and Santa Clara

After last weekend's trip to the East Coast, the Minnesota women's soccer team will head west to wrap up the non-conference slate in California. The No. 10 Gophers are set to face No. 2 Stanford on Friday, Sept. 9 at 8:00 p.m., and will then take on Santa Clara on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 2:00 p.m.
SCOUTING STANFORD AND SANTA CLARA
Stanford is currently ranked the No. 2 program, and has started its season with a 5-0 run. The program's biggest win this season has come from a 1-0 victory against No. 5 Florida. Stanford has not allowed more than two goals in a match at home since 1998. This will be the first meeting for Minnesota and Stanford in program history. Santa Clara enters the weekend with a 2-2-2 record on 2016. After starting out the season 2-0, Santa Clara dropped two games and tied two, most recently to Wisconsin. The Gophers last faced Santa Clara in the 1997 NCAA Tournament. The Broncos' won that meeting, 5-1, to drop Minnesota out in the second round. Prior to Sunday's matchup, Santa Clara will face No. 20 Notre Dame.
LAST TIME OUT
The Gophers split their weekend in North Carolina. Minnesota posted a 5-0 win over Villanova. Sophomore April Bockin scored two goals in the first five minutes of the game, and senior Simone Kolander recorded a goal and two assists. No. 6 Duke issued Minnesota its first loss of the season in a close 1-0 battle. The Gophers led the game in shots and corner kick opportunities, but were unable to get on the scoreboard.
IN THE RANKS
Minnesota is currently ranked No. 10 among NCAA Division I programs. Rankings are determined by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). The Gophers' highest ranking in program history was last week's No. 9 mark, Minnesota fell just one spot after its loss to Duke.

Minnesota holds advantages opponents in 2016 in goals (16-2), shots (112-59), shots on goal (44-17) and corner kicks (31-21). The Gophers' current 5-1 record marks the best start since the 2013 season. Kolander currently leads the team in goals (5), assists (3) and points (13).
