Gophers Collect Nine Wins on Day One

Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Minnesota picked up seven single match victories and two doubles match victories Sunday at the Upper Midwest Intercollegiate hosted by Baseline Tennis Center.
Doubles
Tina Kreinis and Caitlyn Merzbacher started off the day with a 6-2 victory over Taylor Jackson and Kornelia Staniszewska of Augustana.
Karyna Bihel and Barbara Mancera followed up with another win for Minnesota by defeating Margarita Timakova and Karen Alvarez of Iowa State 7-5.
Singles
The Gophers started off their singles victories when Mancera defeated Alvarez 6-1, 6-0 and then won 6-4, 6-2 over Augustana's Meredith Lawrence.
Bihel picked up a win by defeating South Dakota's Yuliya SIdenko 6-1, 6-3 and then defeated Taylor Jackson of Augustana 6-1, 6-2.
Merzbacher defeated Berkley Darr of Augustan 6-0, 6-1 and Hannah Which of South Dakota 6-0, 6-2.
Kreinis ended up falling in her first singles match 3-6, 7-6, 1-0 (3) to Staniszewska but bounced back with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Timakova in her second match.
