University of Minnesota volleyball head coach Hugh McCutcheon has been named the president of the International Volleyball Federations' (FIVB) Coaching and Technical Commission.

McCutcheon has served on the FIVB Coaching Commission since leaving USA Volleyball in 2012 and has now been promoted to the role of commission president. Prior to his University of Minnesota tenure, McCutcheon guided both the United States men's and women's National Teams to gold and silver medals at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. He is the only head coach to lead a United States men's and women's team to Olympic podium finishes. In addition, McCutcheon's teams won the FIVB World League in 2008 and the FIVB World Grand Prix in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

McCutcheon just completed his fifth season as the Gopher Volleyball head coach, leading the team to back-to-back NCAA Final Four appearances in 2015 and 2016. McCutcheon holds a 134-37 collegiate record and in 2015 he guided Minnesota to its first Big Ten conference title since 2002. McCutcheon was awarded the 2015 American Volleyball Coaches Association Coach of the Year and the 2015 Big Ten Coach of the Year. His Gopher program has produced two Big Ten Players of the Year (Daly Santana in 2015 and Sarah Wilhite in 2016) and one AVCA National Player of the Year (Sarah Wilhite in 2016). During his tenure eight different Gopher athletes have received 11 All-America awards and 10 have received 19 All Big Ten recognition.

The FIVB Coaching and Technical Commission (formerly two separate commissions) will have 10 members in total: the President (McCutcheon), Secretary (former France/Poland coach Philippe Blain) and eight members. This is the first time ever that the FIVB has opened the door to bring in the expert opinions of such an accomplished group of former and current international coaches - coaches that have led teams to numerous Olympic, World Championship, World League and World Grand Prix titles. The FIVB is confident that the wealth of experience the commission brings to the table will go a long way in ensuring that choices made at the international level have a significant positive impact on the sport. A majority of the meetings will be conducted by teleconference with an annual meeting in Lausanne.
