Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Minnesota women's tennis team will begin their spring season Saturday with a 10 a.m. match versus Northern Illinois and a 5 p.m. match versus South Dakota State.
The Gophers are coming off a successful outing at the Upper Midwest Intercollegiate where they won 14 total matches. Minnesota currently has a 70-62 singles record and a 50-31 doubles record this season. Sophomore Camila Vargas Gomez is tied for the most singles victories on the team, going 9-4 in singles and 13-5 in doubles. She won three singles matches at the ITA Central Region Championship.
Freshman Cammy Frei teamed up with junior Caroline Ryba to lead the team with nine doubles victories. Ryba was 6-6 in singles matches during the fall and advanced to the round of 16 at the ITA Central Region Championships that were hosted at Baseline Tennis Center.
About Northern Illinois
Last season the Huskies posted a 6-14 overall record and were 1-7 in the Mid-American Conference. They have six returners including senior Adey Osabuohien who was 20-8 in singles last season.
About South Dakota State
The Jackrabbits are coming off of a 16-10 season that placed them second in the Summit League. This season they were picked to place third.
Newcomers
The other two student-athletes with nine singles victories are both freshman. Frei has kicked off her collegiate career with a 9-6 singles record and a 16-6 doubles record. Karyna Bihel is 9-5 in singles matches and 6-6 in doubles after winning five matches at the Upper Midwest Intercollegiate.
Kalyssa Hall has posted 6-7 singles record along with a 6-6 doubles record during the fall while Tina Kreinis is 7-7 in singles and 9-8 in doubles, both are freshman. New sophomore transfer from N.C. State, Barbara Mancera, is 3-4 in singles and 3-2 in doubles.
The Maroon and Gold also feature a newcomer on the coaching staff as Nick Kavelaris took over the assistant coach position during the summer.
How the Scoring Works
No-ad scoring will be used in both singles and doubles. Three doubles matches will be played to begin the dual. Each match is one set to six, with a tie-break at six-all. The first team to earn two doubles wins earns one team point. Doubles play will be followed by six singles matches (best two of three sets--tie-breaks at six-all). Each singles match is worth one team point.
