STARTING FIVE
• The University of Minnesota men's basketball team closes out the month of January at home, hosting Maryland for just their third meeting as members of the Big Ten Conference. Last season, the Gophers upended the fifth-ranked Terrapins, 68-63, on February 18 at the Barn.
• Saturday's game will be celebrated as part of Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Week, in which members of both coaching staffs will trade in their traditional dress shoes for sneakers to raise awareness for cancer research and prevention. The Gopher coaches also wore sneakers in Wednesday's game at Ohio State.
• In the latest edition of the NCAA Ratings Percentage Index (RPI), the Gophers stand in 21st place. For the first time since the end of November, the Gophers are not receiving votes in either the Associated Press media or USA Today coaches polls.
• Redshirt junior Reggie Lynch sits among the nation's leaders in blocked shots. The Edina, Minn. native now has 61 blocks on the season, leading both the team and the Big Ten Conference and fifth nationally with an average of 3.0 blocks per game. He is spearheading the Minnesota team blocking effort which leads the Big Ten and ranks fourth in Division I at 6.4 blocks per game.
• The Gophers will split their time between home and road games over the next three weeks. The Gophers will not have back-to-back Big Ten games at home until February 15 and 19 against Indiana and Michigan. Minnesota, along with Rutgers, is the only Big Ten team that will not have a two-game homestand until February - although the Scarlet Knights will host Wisconsin on Jan. 28 at nearby Madison Square Garden in New York City then host Iowa three days later in Piscataway.

SCOUTING THE TERRAPINS
• Maryland sits atop the Big Ten standings, sharing the top spot with Wisconsin after starting conference season 6-1. The Terrapins' only conference loss came at home to Nebraska, 67-65, on New Year's Day.
• The Terps have not lost a true road game this season, with their only other loss coming to Pittsburgh, 73-59, on Nov. 29 in College Park as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
• Melo Trimble leads the Maryland offense, averaging 17.4 points per game as one of three double-digit scorers. Trimble is tied for fifth among the conference's leading scorers.
