A twist of fate led Alyssa Goehner (Lakeville, Minn.) to be able to play for her home state. Years later, she could not imagine herself playing anywhere else. Goehner has been a jack of all trades in her time with the Gophers, playing both offensive and defensive roles, but has stabilized the Gopher back row defense.
Gophersports: What was your most challenging moment in volleyball?
Alyssa Goehner: Coming from high school, I was more of an outside hitter and I had to develop a new role on this team at Minnesota. It was tough in the beginning, but I think it turned me into a better player overall.
GS: You were committed to a different school before Minnesota, but due to a coaching change, you decided to commit to the U. Could you imagine yourself having played anywhere else?
AG: No, our coaching staff is so wonderful and I have been fortunate to have such great teammates that I can't imagine myself anywhere else.
GS: Do you have a favorite quote or piece of advice you apply to volleyball when you are playing?
AG: Hugh (McCutcheon) always talks about the idea of composure. So not letting the other team or anyone know when you are frustrated or upset. When things do not go well, we don't have extreme highs or lows, we are just maintaining the same composure.
GS: How is your senior year going academically?
AG: Good, I'll graduate in May. Right now this is my biggest class load for the rest of the year, which is nice. I'm a business marketing major with a possible animal science minor.
GS: What has been the most exciting match the team has played so far this season and why?
AG: I would say playing at Wisconsin. That was a good match for us. It went to five and it took a lot of grind for us to get through it. It was a great win for us.
GS: What is the best part about being a part of this team?
AG: Competing for something that is bigger than myself. Being able to come into the gym and work hard, and be with a bunch of hardworking athletes that all share the same goals and dreams.
GS: How has the coaching staff helped you grow was a player?
AG: Our coaching staff focuses on the whole piece of us, they are worried about our family life, volleyball and school. It helps knowing they are invested in the rest of my life, so that when it comes to volleyball, I can trust them. That better relationship makes for better play on the court.
