Minnesota women's gymnastics has welcomed another addition to its roster. Mary Korlin-Downs joins the Gophers from Iowa State and is from Lake Elmo, Minn. Get to know Korlin-Downs in this Q&A.

Gopher Sports: How did you get into gymnastics?

Mary Korlin-Downs: I was taking swimming lessons at a sports center called Perpetual Motion. I wasn't able to take my eyes off the "big girls" doing flips and twists, so my mom signed me up for a trampoline and tumble class. I was pretty late in my start with the sport, but eventually I made the competition team. I've been in love with the sport ever since.

GS: Why did you choose to transfer to Minnesota?

MKD: It's my home. Ever since the legend, Alexis Russell, strolled through, I have been the biggest gopher fan. I remember going to the Sports Pavilion every other Saturday night and I was always first in line for autographs... I'm pretty sure at one point in time every girl on the team knew my name. I grew up here and I'm glad to say that I'm back home and excited to be at the Pav, this time on the other side of the stanchions ropes with the most amazing gophers by my side.

GS: What are your goals for this season?

MKD: A few goals I have for this season is to continue to strengthening my body so I will be healthier than ever, and can help the team for next season. I would also love to see this team show the nation what we are capable of. I believe a lot of team see us as an underdog, but I know this team is full of talent and will accomplish amazing things.

GS: What have you learned from your time at the University of Minnesota so far?

MKD: I have learned that I will never move away from this beautiful state ever again. This state, this campus, and this University are so unbelievably amazing and, I feel extremely blessed to be able to continue my education and gymnastics career here.

GS: What events do you compete in?

MKD: Previously I trained all-around, but I will most likely specialize in beam and uneven bars now.

GS: Who have been your biggest supporters?

MKD: My parents, 100%. It's hard to see your child go through countless injuries and comebacks, but they have never given up on me and have always supported me through my crazy gymnastics career. I also think my grandparents have been one of my best support systems. I'm still waiting for the day that my grandma can see me compete in the Sports Pavilion.

GS: What are you looking forward to this season?

MKD: NCAA Regionals and Championships. My teammates have told me nothing but good things about the postseason. I cannot wait to experience that with my team!
