Gophers in the Pros: Feb. 15

MINNEAPOLIS ââ'¬" As the Gopher women's hockey team prepares for the final weekend of the regular season, catch up on the recent action for the Gophers alumni competing in the NWHL and CWHL this season, including all-star games for both leagues.
In total, seven University of Minnesota alumni are playing in the NWHL and CWHL this season: Megan Bozek, Jordyn Burns, Amanda Kessel; Amanda Leveille, Gigi Marvin, Milica McMillen, and Anne Schleper are competing in the NWHL while Sarah Davis and Kelly Terry are continuing their CWHL careers. The nine Golden Gophers are among 36 WCHA alumni playing in either the NWHL or CWHL this season.
CWHL Update
Feb. 4 ââ'¬" Boston Blades at Calgary Inferno
Sarah Davis and the Calgary Inferno dominated the Boston Blades by a score of 9-2. Calgary had an impressive four-goal first period, two of which Davis assisted. The Inferno scored five more goals in the second period, before the Blades responded with two goals in the third period, for a final score of 9-2.
Feb. 5 ââ'¬" Boston Blades at Calgary Inferno
The Calgary Inferno swept the Boston Blades at home, shutting them out by a score of 4-0 in game two of the series. Scoring started off slow the second night with Calgary's first goal coming with 1:55 left in the first period. The Inferno scored two more goals in the middle frame, before scoring the final goal in the third period.
Feb. 5 ââ'¬" Toronto Furies at Les Canadiennes Montreal
Former Gopher Kelly Terry and the Toronto Furies were defeated by Les Canadiennes Montreal in a 2-1 overtime game. Montreal scored early in the first period to secure a 1-0 lead. The goal held up until Terry tied the game midway through the third period. Montreal's Marie-Philip Poulin ended the game, scoring 42 seconds into overtime.
CWHL All-Star Game
Kelly Terry scored one goal as she competed for Team Blue in the CWHL All-Star Game last weekend. Team Blue was defeated by a score of 9-5. The game opened with three goals from Team White, before Terry scored early in the second period to put her team within two. Each team scored one more goal before the second period concluded with Team White leading 4-2. Both teams erupted for multiple goals in the third period, Team Blue scoring three goals, while Team White scored five goals for a 9-5 final score.

NWHL Update
Feb. 4 ââ'¬" Buffalo Beauts at New York Riveters
Before the All-Star Game festivities, the New York Riveters hosted the Buffalo Beauts, defeating them 3-2. The Riveters opened the game with two goals, both of which were assisted by Amanda Kessel. Milica McMillen also picked up an assist on the team's second goal. New York scored an early second-period goal, before Buffalo responded with two goals, but the Riveters' 3-2 lead held up for the win.
Feb. 4 ââ'¬" Connecticut Whale at Boston Pride
The Boston Pride continued its 12-game undefeated streak when they hosted the Connecticut Whale, beating them by a score of 5-2. Boston opened up the scoring late in the first period before Connecticut tied the game with 15 seconds left in the frame. The Whale took a 2-1 lead late in the second period, but the Pride erupted with four goals in the final period. Former Gopher Gigi Marvin posted assists on the final two goals of the game.
NWHL All-Star Game
Two former Gophers participated in the NWHL All-Star Weekend. Amanda Kessel captained her team, Team Kessel, and drafted fellow former Gophers Megan Bozek and Gigi Marvin.
During the game, Team Kessel won by a score of 11-10 against Team Steadman, captained by Kelley Steadman. Kessel lived up to her captain role, scoring a hat-trick, including the game-winning goal, for her team. Bozek also scored a goal for Team Kessel. On Sunday night, Kessel was featured as "Bucci's Star of the Night" on ESPN.
In the 2017 NWHL Skills Showdown, Marvin was chosen as the winner for Best Breakaway. Bozek was part of the Hardest Shot compeition after winning last year's event with an 88 mph slapshot. This year the title went to Blake Bolden of the Boston Pride at 87 mph.
