In honor of Black History Month, Gopher Athletics is celebrating those who made us great. Throughout February, GopherSports.com will share short interviews with African-American alumni from almost every Gopher program. In these interviews, former student-athletes reflect on their time at the U of M, provide advice to current Gophers and share what Black History Month means to them personally.

Roger "Roy" Artis III

What is it you miss most about the University?
Game day, preparation, travel, fans, tailgaters, being a player. The excitement and interpersonal relationships with other student and athletes.

If you could give the current student-athletes any piece of advice, what would it be?
Stay grounded. Set goals and be true to self. Ask yourself the question, "Who am I and what's important?" Keep the eye on the prize.

Please share your favorite university or athletic event you've attended since you graduated and what made it so special to you?
Tailgating at Gopher football games.

What are you grateful for?
I'm grateful for the opportunity to be a Gopher student-athlete. I'm thankful to the coaches, and past and present athletes that inspire greatness and character.

What does Black History Month mean to you?
We need to value the American experience every day of the year.

What occupies your time now?
My family, sport officiating, enjoying the outdoors, daily exercise, studying God's playbook.
