Ali Qualifies for World Championships

BEND, Ore. (GopherSports.com) - Gophers freshman Hamza Ali placed third in the men's junior eight-kilometer race at the USATF Cross Country Championships on Saturday, securing a bid to represent the U.S. at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships next month in Kampala, Uganda.

One of three true freshmen for the Gophers running at Rivers Edge Golf Course on Saturday, Ali traversed the eight-kilometer course in 26:14.5 while Nick Rink came in ninth at 27:00.0 and Alec Basten finished 19th at 27:54.0.

A native of Minneapolis, Minn., Ali entered the meet having set a Gophers record to win the Twin Cities 5K earlier this year (14:47) and also picked up an individual title at the Fall Finale.

Final rosters for the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, as well as the NACAC Cross Country Championships, are expected to be released by USATF in the coming days.
