Sara Groenewegen has been named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season and 14th time in her career. In total she has won 19 B1G weekly honors.
Groenewegen tossed two complete games and did not allow an earned run as the Gophers swept the Northwestern Wildcats this past weekend. On Friday she pitched through three rain delays in a game that ended four hours and 17 minutes after the first pitch was thrown. She still managed to strikeout 11 batter while scattering five hits.
On Sunday Groenewegen was locked in. She had a perfect game going into the fourth inning with two outs on the board. She finished with 10 strikeouts and only allowed two hits in a five inning shutout.
This season Groenewegen is 19-2 with a 0.68 ERA and 168 strikeouts. She was recently named a top-25 finalist for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award and a top-10 finalist for the Senior CLASS Award for her character and work on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.
