University of Minnesota head coach Stefanie Golan announced the team captains for the 2017 season. Tori Burnett (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Emily Heslin (Woodbury, Minn.) will lead the Golden Gophers.

"It's awesome that we have several student-athletes who have qualities that create a great sense of collective leadership," Golan said. "We feel Tori and Emily will provide leadership on the field that is necessary to drive our success on game day."

Golan also believes they each bring the willingness to take on the responsibility of being vocal and solve problems in the heat of the moment.

Burnett will be a senior defender while Heslin is going to be a junior midfielder for the Gophers this fall. Both started in each game last season as the Gophers won both the Big Ten Conference regular season and tournament titles for the first time in program history.

Burnett has played in 47 games for the Maroon and Gold in three seasons, including starting the last 45 games. She has scored one goal and assisted on two from the defender spot.

Heslin was awarded the Ironwoman Award last season by the team. She was named to the Big Ten All-Tournament team and scored the game-winner against Rutgers in the Big Ten Championship game. She has appeared in 45 games with the Gophers, and has scored two goals.

"We are confident that they will be excellent team captains," Golan said. "We're just as confident that supporting leaders will continue to bring out their best qualities to ensure we are all locked in and focused on the process as we work to build upon the success of the 2016 season."
