Esser to Compete at Canadian Championships

MINNEAPOLIS - University of Minnesota women's track & field rising senior Agnes Esser is set to compete in both the discus and hammer throw at the 2017 Canadian Track & Field Championships at the Terry Fox Athletic Facility in Ottawa, Ontario this Thursday through Saturday.
Esser enters the discus competition as the top seed (57.91m, 190-00), and she is seeded sixth in the hammer (61.66m, 202-03). The McBride, B.C., native begins competition with the hammer throw qualifying round on Thursday; the discus qualifying round was canceled, so she advances straight to the Friday's final.
Esser's full competition schedule is as follows:
Thursday, July 6
Hammer Qualifying Round, 4 p.m. CT

A year ago at the 2016 Canadian Championships/Rio Olympic Trials, Esser won the discus national title with a winning mark of 50.32m (165-01). She also finished fifth in the hammer throw with a mark of 59.11m (193-11).
Esser wrapped up her junior season with the Gophers this spring. She was an NCAA West Prelim qualifier in both the discus and hammer throw, placing 13th in discus (53.11m, 174-03) and 14th in hammer (60.67m, 199-00). She also finished third in discus (52.05m, 170-09) and fifth in hammer (59.30m, 194-07) at the Big Ten Championship.
The Gophers' program record-holder in the discus (57.91m), Esser ended her third season with the Maroon & Gold ranked fourth in Minnesota history in the hammer (61.66m).
