Gophers Start Strong At Gopher Invite

The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers' women's tennis team opened up its annual home tournament, the Gopher Invitational, Thursday at the Baseline Tennis Center.
Minnesota won three out of the five flights, with every Gopher pairing winning at least one match.
Caitlyn Merzbacher and Tina Kreinis started the day off for the Gophers, cruising to a 6-2 win over a duo from Iowa State. Merzbacher and Kreinis took their second match as well, beating a duo from North Carolina 7-6, winning Flight 1.
Mehvish Safdar was paired with Annemarie Emme in Flight 2, where the two lost their first match to a pair from South Dakota 7-6. They bounced back in the consolation pairing with a strong 6-1 win against South Dakota State.
Minnesota had a strong showing in Flight 3, featuring two wins for the duo of senior Caroline Ryba and freshman newcomer River Hart. The duo won their first match easily, 6-1 over South dakota State, and took the second 7-5 over Iowa State.
Barbera Mancera and Camila Vargas Gomez lost their first match in Flight 4, 8-6, in a hotly contested match with Marquette. They rebounded in the consolation match with an easy 6-1 victory over South Dakota State.
Karina Bihel and Kalyssa Hall played in the lone round robin flight of day, and won both matches: a 6-4 win over a duo from South Dakota, and clean 6-0 win over a duo from South Dakota State.
The tournament will continue at 8:00 a.m. Friday, and continue through Saturday and Sunday.
