The University of Minnesota soccer team will be taking on Michigan State to wrap up the weekend on Sunday, Aug. 24 at 1 p.m. The Gophers (4-2-3, 0-1-1 Big Ten) will be playing on BTN Plus and looking for their first Big Ten win of the 2017 season.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS

The Spartans are coming off a 2-1 overtime defeat against the Wisconsin Badgers. Michigan State has scored 12 goals this season, and have allowed 12. Their leading scorer is Jamie Cheslik, who has started all 10 games and has scored five goals and assisted on two more. Lexy Warner and Kristelle Yewah are the other two Spartans with more than one goal at two this season. In net is likely Reilley Ott. She has started 10 games this season and has surrendered 17 goals for a 1.87 goals against average. She has 54 saves, which is second most in the Big Ten.

LAST TIME OUT - MICHIGAN

The Gophers went to double overtime for the fourth time this year, and have now played in more overtime games than regulation games this season. Michigan took an early lead in the first half, but Minnesota responded. Senior forward Julianna Gernes scored two goals in 10 minutes to give the Gophers their first lead with four minutes remaining. Michigan then was able to score with just 11 seconds left to send the game to overtime, which led to the Gophers third tie of the season.

"Really pleased with the performance, really disappointed with the results. We certainly outplayed them and had a lot more opportunities, their keeper stood on her head a bit today," head coach Stefanie Golan said. "We should have been going to the corner to take off more time on the clock, but we didn't and it is unfortunate and we will learn from it and it won't happen again."

JULIANNA'S JUBULATION

Julianna Gernes scored a pair of goals against Michigan for her first multiple goal game of her Minnesota career. Gernes has scored on over 58.8 percent of her shots this season, which leads the team (min. 10 shots on goal).

MAKING ADJUSTMENTS

The Gophers this year have had 91 shots in the second half, much more than their first half 63. They have scored 13 goals in the second half to just four in the first half. They have also earned more corners in the second half of games this season at 27 versus 21 in the first half.

SCORING IN BUNCHES

In multiple cases this year, the Gophers have been able to string together quality chances, and it has shown. Not only did Sydney Squires score four goals in 17 minutes, but Gernes also scored twice in 10 minutes against Michigan. Against NDSU, Squires and Heslin scored goals just seven minutes apart as well.

KEEP THE GOAL CLEAN

The Gopher defense has held all but two teams this year to less than 10 shots in a game. Most notably just two against North Dakota State and just three against Utah State. On average, the Gophers have allowed just above eight shots per game, with only about two on goal.
