MINNEAPOLIS - Classes are back in session and another season of college hockey is just around the corner. The Gopher women's hockey juniors and seniors share how they spent their summer break.
Emma May: Summer was the time of my life! I was given the opportunity to work the All-Star MLB games in Miami, Florida and I spent a little over a week there. I made some great connections with professionals who work in the major leagues and continued to grow my network with each opportunity. I also was humbled by the volunteer work that I participated in from working with Hands of Miami building a park to helping with Team Cora for the Ragnar. I continued to work small jobs for the Minnesota Wild during the summer as well as being a part-time goaltender coach at MEGA. In my free time, I trained my hardest and spent time with friends who came back from college. I spent a weekend in Denver as well as went to the University of Wisconsin to visit some of my closest friends. Summer gave me time to grow as a player and a person. Now I'm excited to start the season and see where it takes the team this year!
Nicole Schammel: I stayed around campus for most of the summer while taking a few classes and training. I worked at Os Hockey, which was a blast! It was so much fun to coach younger girls. I went home most weekends and spent as much time on the lake as possible. I am looking forward to getting back to school and getting the season underway!
Taylor Williamson: I started my summer off by studying abroad with Caitlin, Kippin, and Serena in a class called Tastes of Germany and Switzerland. It was a three-week course, so we spent two weeks traveling around the southern part of Germany, then our class spent the last week in the Swiss Alps. Fortunately, we were able to spend one more week in Europe with our mothers in Florence, Italy. Once I returned home, I spent my time training hard on campus. I also was able to spend time at home in Edina, with my family and friends. On the weekends, I would go up to my cabin that is located on Lake Margaret in Lake Shore, Minnesota. Up there, we spend most of our time on the water. Our favorite activity to do up there is wake surf, but just being outside on the water with family and friends is the ultimate blessing. I was lucky enough to go to two amazing concerts this summer. The first one was the Florida Georgia Line concert at Target Field, and the second one was the Sam Hunt concert at the Minnesota State Fair! Any person that lives in Minnesota knows there is no better way to end the summer than at the Great Minnesota Get-Together.
Sophie Skarzynski: The first weeks of summer after final exams I went home and rested back with my family in Chicago. I then went on a study abroad trip to Barcelona, Spain where I traveled around Europe and took two political science courses. I also met four other GWH members in Florence, Italy for five days. I did research on the current political parties of Spain for one of my professors. I returned to the University of Minnesota after my study abroad to get back on the ice and continue to do my off ice summer training regiment. On the weekends, I hung out with my teammates and friends and went up north to friends cabins quite a bit. In August, I went home for another five days to see my family and little sister before she went off to college. I have been back on campus since getting on the ice and in the weight room ready to go for the season!
Jackie Pieper: Over the summer, I spent most of my time with my family. Every weekend we go up north to our cabin on Lake Alexander, where I love to water ski and paddle board with my two dogs Sprite and Crosby. I also took my very first class at the University of Minnesota this summer called Rhetorical Literature and 20th Century Conflict. When I was not up north or in class, I spent a lot of my time training for this upcoming season, which I am very excited about. Also, I helped my brother with his foundation that he started called The Pieper Hope and Courage Foundation. To end my summer, I went to the Tim Mcgraw and Faith Hill concert, and it was amazing.
Sidney Peters: I spend this summer applying to medical schools and studying for the MCAT. I also took two classes and spent some time volunteering as an EMT. Pretty much the nerdiest summer in the history of summers, but I was very productive! For fun, I went scuba diving in Lake Superior and checked out some shipwrecks.
Sydney Baldwin: Over the summer, I was busy with an internship at Home Health Care, Inc. as a Human Resources Intern. When not working, I spent my time taking two classes, training, staying on the ice, getting outside, and spending my weekends at the cabin. This summer I also took a couple trips in the states and even made it to Iceland and Italy. I'm very much looking forward to the start of the school year and especially getting back on the ice with my fellow Gophers!
Cara Piazza: This summer I had an internship at Andersen Windows that focused on my engineering major. I was able to relax at home and spend time with family in Illinois for a few weeks after my internship.
