Gophers Wrap Up Jack Johnson Classic

MINNEAPOLIS - Agnes Esser, Kiley Sabin, Taylor Wiebke, and Emma Spagnola led the way as the No. 11 Golden Gopher women's track & field team won four event titles on day two of the Jack Johnson Classic at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.
Minnesota took the top five spots in the weight throw led by Esser's career-best throw of 20.99m (68-10.50), improving her mark as the third-ranked Gopher in program history. Kaitlyn Long posted a mark of 20.76m (68-01.50) for a runner-up showing, and Nayoka Clunis threw a career-best 20.54m (67-04.75) for third place and fifth among all-time Gophers.
The record-breaking weight throw performances did not end with the top three. Temi Ogunrinde climbed to sixth in program history with a career-best mark of 20.07m (65-10.25) for fourth place, and Nina Horvath's PR of 19.95m (65-05.50) was good for fifth and lands her seventh among all-time Gophers.
In total, the Gophers posted four of the top seven marks in program history in the weight throw, and all five individuals broke the previous Jack Johnson Classic meet record of 19.56m held by Minnesota alumna Devin Stanford.
The Gophers took home two more event titles in the field events as Wiebke cleared a season-best 1.77m (5-09.75) to win high jump and Sabin threw 16.03m (52-07.25) to win the shot put.
Spagnola won the 60m hurdles in a season-best 8.41 seconds, and Rachel Schow tied her career-best time in 8.52 seconds for second place as the Maroon & Gold claimed the top two spots in the 60m hurdles.
Lindsey Smits (400m), Meleah Biermaier (600m), and Molly Eastman (5,000m) each led the Gophers in their respective events with third-place finishes. Smits took third in the 400m in 57.82 seconds while Biermaier ran 1:35.86 in the 600m to lead Minnesota. Eastman used a career-best time of 17:08.65 to lead the Gophers with a third-place finish in the 5,000m.
Minnesota's 4x400m relay team of Carissa Dock, Kelli Schmidt, Biermaier, and Allison Dugan placed third in 3:55.84 as well.
Other top performances on the track saw Olivia Hummel run a PR of 9:57.76 for fourth place in the 3,000m run while competing unattached. Schmidt was the top Gopher in the mile, clocking a career-best time of 5:02.15 for sixth place with Zetta Mason on her heels in 5:03.43 for seventh overall, and Kelsey Sather led the Gophers in the 800m with a career-best time of 2:19.13 in 11th place.
Day one of the meet saw Karlie Place win the pole vault with a career-best mark of 4.28m (14-00.50), her fourth PR performance in as many meets as a Gopher and the best mark in the Big Ten Conference so far this season. Sofie Albrechtsen scored 3,789 points to place third in the pentathlon to lead Minnesota as well.
Up next, Minnesota travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the University of Michigan Power 5 Invite on Friday, Feb. 2 and Saturday, Feb. 3.
