Gophersports.com caught up with Alice Zeimann has she is in full swing with her sophomore year. Zeimann gained experience over the summer competing New Zealand's Senior Women's Team. She also saw her first collegiate action this year during the Diet Coke Classic. Read more as we caught up with the outside hitter.

How have you individually grown as a player since last season?
Alice Zeimann:
I have grown in confidence and courage. One of the things that the coaches have told is that confidence is fleeting. There are moments where you can feel confident and then it can go away so fast. You can always have courage. That is one thing this season everyone is trying to work on, to have more courage. When you are faced with adversity, to still have courage, and it's really cool to see it happen. Individually, I have been developing the fundamentals and focusing on one thing at a time. Last season, I got caught up in the vast majority of how I had to improve. Now, I have gotten better at selectively working on each piece.

GS: Do you have any pre game rituals?
AZ: One thing that we all do individually is visualize before a game. That is a big ritual we all do. We visualize ourselves on the court and doing all the things we need to do to compete.

What do you like to do outside of volleyball?
AZ: I love to be outside. I love going paddle boarding and being on the lake or going on runs to the Stone Arch Bridge. When it is winter and we don't have much time, going to the movies is really fun, or just reading a book, because it takes you to a different place.

This past summer you went back to New Zealand and played with the New Zealand's Senior Women's team, what was that experience like?
AZ:
Going home was a really good experience for me because I got to appreciate how fortunate we are here in terms of resources we have and coaches in terms of how much time we can put into it. Back home it was really cool because I had a different role on the team. I played a lot back home, so I had more responsibility and that was good for me. I was able to put what I've learned from here into action. It was also great going home and being around the team, which I have known for years now.

GS: Did you get to see your family while you were there?
AZ: I got to spend a week at home with my whole family, and then I went on tour for two weeks. My mom came with me so that was nice. It was great for her too because she hasn't seen me play much since I left for Minnesota. It was cool for her to see the change. You don't always see yourself changing that much, but for someone who hasn't seen you play in a year in a half, it looks way different!

You made your collegiate appearance at the Diet Coke Classic, how did that feel?
AZ:
I did not make the connection that it was the first time I had gone in until it was after the game. It felt normal stepping on the court, which is good. I think I was focused on what I had to do for the team to win the next point. Looking back on it, I think it was a big moment for both of us because you've really hard worked at it and it was nice to be able to contribute.
