Marshall Picks Up WCHA Weekly Honors

Junior Patti Marshall is the WCHA Defense of the Week after helping the Gophers to a sweep over Mercyhurst.
MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota junior Patti Marshall has been named the WCHA Defense of the Week after helping the No. 3 Golden Gopher women's hockey team to a non-conference sweep over then-No. 10 Mercyhurst with 4-2 and 5-0 victories over the weekend. The award marks Marshall's second WCHA weekly award of her career and first of the season.
In two games against Mercyhurst, Marshall recorded three points (1g-2a), three shots on goal, seven blocked shots, and plus-five plus/minus rating. Marshall scored Minnesota's first goal of the season, evening the score at 1-1 in the Gophers' season-opening 4-2 win. She then added a pair of assists in game two of the series, setting up the Gophers' second and third goals in the team's 5-0 win. Marshall helped the Gophers shut out Mercyhurst and post a 1.00 goals against average in the two games.
The Thief River Falls, Minn., native is tied for the WCHA scoring lead among defense with three points while her plus-five plus/minus rating is tops among league blue-liners. Marshall's seven blocked shots over the weekend are also tied for the WCHA's best. Nationally, Marshall is tied for second in scoring among defense and her plus-five rating is the best in the country.
Marshall and the Gophers open WCHA play with a top-five this weekend as the No. 3 Gophers travel to No. 4 Minnesota Duluth. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m. CT on Friday and 3:07 p.m. CT on Saturday.
