One of the sharpest minds on the team comes from right up the middle. Center Jared Weyler anchors the Minnesota offensive line with his six-foot-four, 300-pound frame, providing distinct leadership and skill.

Weyler's other prowess is his talent in the classroom. Weyler graduated last spring with a double major in Finance and Entrepreneurial Management from the Carlson School of Management. He is currently working on obtaining his master's degree in accountancy and is prepping for an upcoming CPA exam.

The Dayton, Ohio native sees his opportunity as a student-athlete to grow past just his skill on the field. On top of being a premiere Big Ten student-athlete, he also took on a double major that US News & World Report ranked as one of the best in the nation in 2018.

"It's a dream come true. I grew up in the Midwest, in Ohio, and I always wanted to play in the Big Ten," Weyler said. "On top of that, to get a degree from one of the best business schools in the country is just unbelievable. I'm at a loss of words for it because it's something that my family and I are very thankful for. Not a whole lot of people get this opportunity so I'm truly blessed."

While working toward his masters, Weyler is taking the extra step to ensure he builds upon the bright future already ahead of him as a true professional in the business world.

"I got both my degrees from the Carlson School of Management, and it's a great school to get a degree from," Weyler said. "I've gotten a lot out of this school since I've been here and it's been an awesome experience. Hopefully it will set up the next 40 or 50 years of my life."

Weyler will be going into accounting, a complex profession that requires a love and skill for finance, both of which Weyler possesses. His job will allow him room for advancement and give him the chance to grow past the impressive accolades he has already attained.

Weyler said that he wishes to go into public accounting first, which intrigues him because of the networking opportunities allowed to younger employees, and the connections one can make with high-level executives, as well as the option to remain in public accounting or work in corporate. He is well on his way to making that happen as he already has three job offers for after graduation.

Minnesota has provided Weyler opportunities for more than just in-class learning from professors, but networking with classmates and learning about real-world scenarios from professionals in the world-class Twin Cities business community.

"A lot of recruiters come in and recruit Carlson, so you get to meet a lot of really cool people from big companies and network with them," Weyler said. "Also, your classmates are a great networking opportunity, because they're intelligent people too. Also, all the professors have career experience as well as being teachers, so you get to learn how to apply the concepts that they teach to realistic scenarios."

On the field, Weyler has faced considerable adversity in his career, sitting out his first year due to injury, and missing games during his sophomore and junior year because of injuries.

But, adversity is what drives the strong-willed senior, giving him a base for positivity in his life both inside and outside of football.

"You're always going to face adversity, whether it's in football or in life," he said. "No matter what happens to you, you have to stay positive and keep pushing forward, and that's what I've done. I've had a lot of setbacks, but I've also had a lot of really cool things happen to me, so when you have a setback, you have to overcome that. The best thing to do is to stay positive, keep working hard and do what you have to do to get through it and continue growing and get better"

Weyler has a drive to be the best in all areas of his life. Being a standout athlete isn't enough for him, and neither is being a top-tier student. Weyler wants to succeed in life, which is why he gives maximum effort into everything he does, something that is heavily reinforced by both his team and head coach P.J. Fleck.

"Coach Fleck is big on all four areas of your life (academically, athletically, socially and spiritually) and it's all true," Weyler said. "Coach says, 'Whatever you're doing right now be 100 percent into it. If you're in football right now, do football 100 percent, if you're in school right now, do school 100 percent, if you're with your friends, be there 100 percent.' So that's been huge in terms of growth because I've been in the moment the whole time rather than looking forward to something else. I've gotten to experience things first-hand in the moment and take it all in, and that's been amazing."
