ROSEMONT, Ill. – Three student-athletes from the University of Minnesota soccer team were recognized with Big Ten post season accolades as voted on by the leagues 14 coaches. After a stellar conference season performance, senior forward April Bockin was named the Big Ten Forward of the Year as well as to the First Team All-Big Ten. Senior midfielder Molly Fiedler was named to the Third Team All-Big Ten while freshman forward Patricia Ward was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. Senior defender Emily Peterson was named the team's Sportsmanship Award Honoree.
A native of Eden Prairie, Minn., Bockin has had a dominate season leading the Big Ten in nearly every offensive category. Her 10 goals, eight of which came during conference play, 60 shots and 25 points lead all Big Ten scorers. Adding five assists this season, Bockin is currently tied for fifth all-time in program history with Corrine Bolder and Erin Hussey with 25 career assists. She has been on a hot stretch lately scoring at least one goal in six of the last 10 matches including scoring in five straight matches during that span. During conference play, Bockin found the back of the net twice against Wisconsin and Iowa while also scoring the game-winner in the upset win over No. 12 Northwestern at home.
Fiedler has also been making her name known in the Gophers record books as she sits tied for seventh all-time with 24 career assists and has started in all 82 games of her collegiate career. With a team-leading six assists the Egan, Minn. native is tied for the fifth most assists in the conference. On top of the six assists Fielder has added three goals on nine shots on goal to total 12 points. This marks the second-straight season that Fielder has earned All-Big Ten accolades after being named to the second team last season.
In her rookie season, Ward has played a pivotal role at the top as a forward. The Newport News, Va. native has started in the last 12 matches for the Gophers while appearing in all 18. She began her collegiate career on a high note scoring the game-winner in the season opener at Utah with 11 seconds remaining. She also assisted Molly Fielder in scoring the first goal allowed by Stanford in the open field of play in over 2,200 minutes. A key role player, Ward has taken advantage of the four shots on goal she has taking finding the back net twice in those chances.
With the opportunity for each team in the conference to nominate a player they believe represents their best sportsmanship there was no better pick than senior captain Emily Peterson. The defender from Prior Lake, Minn. has played in 14 matches this season after returning from an ACL injury which she suffered last spring.
The Gophers enter the Big Ten Tournament as the No. 7 seed and will travel to take on No. 2 Rutgers in a quarterfinal matchup Sunday, Oct. 28. Kickoff is set for noon CT.
