Gopher Spotlight: Alexis Hart
10/9/2018 8:58:00 AM | Volleyball
A student, volunteer, athlete and dog mom, Alexis Hart does it all. When she isn't on the court practicing or playing, she is involved in the community volunteering or spending time with her dog, Diamond. After spending this past summer in Minnesota, Hart was able to take classes and spend some extra time in the gym as she prepared to battle with her team this season. Competing in one of the best volleyball conferences in the country, every day is a battle. Hear more from junior outside hitter, Alexis Hart.
You spent most of your summer in Minnesota, what did you do with your time?
I intend to graduate early, so I took a lot of classes. I had both May term and summer school classes. I trained a lot and got in the gym a few extra times just to get better.
How did the extra time in the gym this summer help get your ready for this season?
Since I'm a junior, it's time to step up and be an upperclassmen and be a good role model for the freshman. It just helped me become more experienced with passing and having a good IQ of volleyball.
What kinds of classes did you take over the summer?
I want to major in business and marketing, so I took a lot of business classes to get a feeling of what I want to do with business.
Would you want to minor in anything?
Probably not, but I'll do an internship next summer. I'm not sure what yet, I'm still looking for options.
You were honored with the POET Student Athlete Spotlight at the football game earlier this year, what was that like?
It was pretty cool. I wasn't expecting to receive it because everyone volunteers. When I was walking back to my seat at the game, everyone was congratulating me. It was cool to see that I got recognized for volunteering.
Where do you volunteer at?
Typically I help a lot with the volleyball clinics and HopeKids. I did a lot more my freshman year with the Boys and Girls Club for students who want to be an athlete in college, but need encouragement that they have to do well in school and athletics to do so.
What are some skills you have been working to improve on?
I've really been working on my defense, especially on passing because I need to pass more. One thing I want to get better at is blocking because I feel like it is something that hasn't always been my strength, but I'm trying to make it one.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I have a dog so I love taking her on walks. She has a best friend and I'm close friends with the owner so we go walking a lot with our dogs. Her name is Diamond and I got her when she was seven weeks old. She is a year old now and is big! She weighs almost 70 pounds.
What is your game day routine like?
Typically I come to the gym and listen to my favorite music/song. I like to chill in the locker room. Before every game I watch highlights of myself to help visualize some of the good things I'm doing. If I see myself hitting line, high seam or passing a ball because I'm forward and balanced, that is something that really helps me get focused. I'm watching more highlights of myself so I can see good examples and continue to do it consistently.
What are you most looking forward to this season?
I'm just excited to be competing in the Big Ten Conference. Our league is so hard, but it is really cool to battle. There is so much good volleyball and every team is goo so t's a battle, but I love it. Every day is a different challenge.
