Brown Earns WCHA Monthly Accolades

Emily Brown has been named the WCHA Defense of the Month for October 2018.

MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota sophomore defense Emily Brown has earned her first WCHA Defenseman of the Month Award, Powered by Goodwood Hockey, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) announced Thursday.

Earlier this week, Brown was named the WCHA Defenseman of the Week after tying her career high with a two-point series (1g-1a) in the team's road split at No. 1 Wisconsin last weekend.

Over the first month of the season, Brown played in all 10 games for Minnesota and helped the No. 2 Gophers to a 7-2-1 record. She recorded six points (2g-4a) in 10 games and was plus-six while blocking 13 shots. The Blaine, Minn., native led WCHA defense with three power play points and one power play goal. She was also tops among WCHA blue-liners and tied for seventh nationally with two goals. 

Both of Brown's goals in the first month of the season were game-winners, which was a national high among defensemen. She netted the deciding goal in Minnesota's season-opening 4-2 win over then No. 10 Mercyhurst and most recently scored the game-winning goal on the power play in the team's 1-0 win on the road at No. 1 Wisconsin last weekend. Brown also recorded a career-high two assists in Minnesota's 6-2 win on the road at St. Cloud State.

During September and October, Brown was tied for third among WCHA defense with six points and 0.60 points per game. In addition to her offensive presence, Brown helped the Gophers' defense average just 1.60 goals against per game in team's first 10 games, including two shutouts over No. 4 Ohio State and No. 1 Wisconsin.

Brown and the Gophers return to action at Ridder Arena this weekend when Minnesota (7-2-1, 5-2-1-0 WCHA) hosts Bemidji State (0-7-1, 0-3-1-0 WCHA) in a WCHA series at 6:07 p.m. CT Friday and 4:07 p.m. CT Saturday.
