Gophers Rank High in NCAA's Graduation Success Rate

The University of Minnesota today announced that its student-athletes have posted a program-record 93 percent graduation rate, as measured by the NCAA's Graduation Success Rate (GSR). This mark was a one percent increase from last year and three percent from the previous year.

This year's GSR, which focuses on the six-year cohort who came to the U as freshman in 2011, is 25 points higher than that first GSR from 13 years ago. Minnesota's 93 GSR rate is tied for second with Michigan as the best in the Big Ten. Northwestern holds the top spot at 98 percent.

"We want our student-athletes to succeed academically, athletically and socially," said Athletics Director Mark Coyle. "Today's GSR news is another clear validation that our student-athletes are achieving success at the highest level academically. It will always be our priority for Gopher student-athletes to graduate and leave campus prepared for life after college. Our students work extremely hard in the classroom, and I appreciate their dedication to academics. I also appreciate our coaches and academic staff and their continued desire to see our students excel."

The GSR shows the percentage of student-athletes on any given team who earn a college degree within six years of starting school. It represents data from first-time freshmen, student-athletes who entered at midyear, and student-athletes who transferred into the University of Minnesota between 2008 and 2011. It excludes student-athletes who transfer from the university in good academic standing.

"Everything starts with our students and their commitment to academic excellence," said JT Bruett, director of the Lindahl Academic Center. "Our coaches and administrators continue to support the academic pursuits of our student-athletes and we are very fortunate to have an outstanding academic staff. Our entire department continually focuses on the importance of academics and that is clear with today's latest GSR rates.

The NCAA also released Federal Graduation Rates (FGR) in its report, which categorizes student-athletes who transfer from or leave their initial school for any reason as non-graduates, even if they leave in good academic standing or subsequently graduate from another institution. For 2011-12, Gopher Athletics had an 87 percent grad rate using this measure, an eight percent improvement from last year. In the four-class average from 2008-2011, Minnesota ranked third in the Big Ten at 80 percent, trailing only Northwestern and Michigan.

Graduation Success Rates for all 11 Gopher women's programs were 89 percent or higher. Six programs were a perfect 100 percent in the latest report: basketball, gymnastics, hockey, soccer, softball and tennis.

Eight Gopher men's programs achieved Graduation Success Rates of 88 percent or higher and six were above 90 percent, led by tennis and gymnastics, achieving 100 percent rates.
