MINNEAPOLIS -- No. 23 Minnesota opened the game on a 9-2 run and never looked back as it doubled up Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-3), 84-42, Tuesday night at Williams Arena. The Golden Gophers are now off to a 4-0 start for the fourth straight season and fifth time in the last six years.
Four players scored in double figures for Minnesota with senior Kenisha Bell leading the way with 24 points, the most by a Gopher this season and her second 20-point effort in the 2018-19 campaign. She was an efficient 8-of-11 from the floor and 7-of-8 at the free throw line. She also grabbed five rebounds and handed out four assists.
Freshman Mercedes Staples contributed a career-high 13 points as she was 5-of-7 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range. She had scored seven points total in the first three games of the season.
Junior Jasmine Brunson scored 12 points and did not miss from the floor as she made all three shots from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers, and was perfect at the line on all four attempts. Sophomore Destiny Pitts also reached double figures with 11 points, including making 7-of-8 like Bell from the free throw line.
Though she saw her streak of double-doubles come to an end at three, junior Taiye Bello still turned in a dominant performance as she finished with a career-high 19 rebounds. Six rebounds came on the offensive end, while 13 were defensive. The 19 rebounds come one game after she had a then-career high 18, and they were the most by a Gopher since Amanda Zahui B. had 22 against DePaul in the NCAA Tournament on March 20, 2015.
Numerous season highs were established by Minnesota in the game, including points, margin of victory (42), field goal percentage (56.3), 3-pointers made and attempted (7-of-17), 3-point percentage (41.2), free throws made (23), defensive rebounds (37) and total rebounds (50).
The Golden Gophers entered the contest allowing just 49.3 points per game, but that figured dropped to 47.5 afterward as Minnesota had its lowest point total allowed since an 80-36 win over Loyola on Nov. 26, 2013. In addition, coupled with a 53-48 win over San Diego Saturday, the Gophers have now held consecutive opponents below 50 points for the first time since November of 2011 when they did it against Binghamton (40) and North Dakota State (41).
Minnesota led 22-9 after the first quarter and extended the lead out to 47-22 by the half. It was the highest scoring half of the season for the Gophers and the lowest point total for a Minnesota opponent, helping build the biggest halftime lead of the young season. The third quarter was more of the same as Minnesota outscored UAPB 21-8 to enter the fourth quarter with a 68-30 advantage.
Minnesota is back in action this Friday with a matchup against Cornell. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Williams Arena, and the game is set to air on BTN Plus
