Notre Dame Invitational: Day Two
11/3/2018 6:07:00 PM | Tennis
In doubles action the Gophers were edged out in all but one draw of the day when Cammy Frei and River Hart teamed up and took down Big Ten rivals Emma DeCoste and Andrea Ballinger of Ohio State by a score of 6-4. Due to recent injuries and fall tournaments, Tina Kreinis and Bita Mancera have had the opportunity to play as a doubles team for the first time at this weekend's competition. After coming off a win against a tough Notre Dame team in day one, Kreinis and Mancera fell to Tennessee's Gabby Schuck and Tenika McGiffin by a score of 2-6. Tiffany Huber and Caitlyn Merzbacher dropped their solo doubles match of the day to Johanna Silva and Kylie Duckworth of Tennessee 2-6.
The Gophers fell to a 2-4 singles record on the day with wins coming from Tina Kreinis and Tiffany Huber against DePaul opponents by scores of (6-4, 6-3) and (6-1, 6-4). River Hart recorded another 3-set match in the fall season, but eventually fell by a score of 2-6, 6-1, 1-6 to Yergler of DePaul. Mancera and Vargas both dropped their solo singles matches of day two in 3-sets with scores of (6-2, 3-6, 3-6) and (3-6, 7-5, 1-6) respectively. Senior, Merzbacher fell in straight sets 4-6, 3-6 to wrap up day two for the Maroon and Gold.
"The bottom of our lineup was the strength of our team yesterday but today the top of our lineup performed well" head coach Catrina Thompson said. "It was nice to see Tina and Tiffany both win their singles matches to end the day."
Sunday, Nov. 4 will conclude the Notre Dame Invitational and the Gophers' fall season schedule. The day will begin at Eck Tennis Pavilion with doubles draws at 8:30am ET and singles to follow. Live scoring and streaming can be accessed through the link above.
