Sophomore defense Emily Brown chatted with the Voice of Gopher Women's Hockey Dan Hamann last weekend.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Sophomore defense Emily Brown chatted with the Voice of Gopher Women's Hockey Dan Hamann before Minnesota's 6-3 win over Bemidji State last Friday. Listen as Brown discusses her offensive output this season, growing up as a multi-sport athlete, and more.
On her two game-winning goals leading the team so far this season and not having just one player contributing offensively...
Brown: Our whole team is super stars, so it's pretty sweet to get everyone chipping in. All of our lines are deep, all of our D are deep, and we have four really good goalies. It's really exciting when you look at our talent up and down the line chart.
On first getting started in playing hockey...
Brown: How I got started in hockey was through bandy. It's kind of like soccer on ice with sticks. My family is all about basketball, so they were like 'what is she doing?' but they got me a hockey stick and signed me up. My dad promised to bring me every day, and I think that lasted about a week until my mom took over but I definitely credit my dad a lot for convincing my mom and then both of them for endlessly supporting me. I started off in boys' hockey and switched to girls in U12s. I played for Blaine all the way up, and here I am.
On growing up with lots of sports going on in her family...
Brown: My sister was a three-sport athlete with soccer, basketball, and track. I played soccer, hockey, and track. Before high school, I played a lot of other sports, too, so we were always doing something. My mom and dad would split time when one would come to my game and one would go to the other, and my grandparents were always in the mix, too, so definitely very active.
On what sport she would play if she wasn't playing hockey...
Brown: Probably soccer. There was a brief time period where I was considering if I could play soccer in college, but I also really enjoyed track. I think it's a really unique sport, so that's a tough question.
Brown and the Gophers are off from competition this weekend during the Four Nations Cup, but Minnesota returns to action with a second home-and-home series with St. Cloud State Nov. 17-18. The Gophers and Huskies face off in St. Cloud, Minn., at 2:07 p.m. CT on Saturday, Nov. 17 before concluding the series at Ridder Arena at 2:07 p.m. CT on Sunday, Nov. 18.
