Seniors Celebrated At Banquet, Johnson Named MVP

Team awards handed out at annual banquet
The University of Minnesota football team and the Goal Line Club celebrated the 2018 season at the annual Golden Gopher Football Banquet on Sunday afternoon at TCF Bank Stadium.Â
The highlight of the program was the announcement of the team's annual awards. Junior wide receiver Tyler Johnson was honored with the Bronko Nagurski Award, which is given annually to the team's most valuable player.Â
Carter Coughlin received the Carl Eller Award (outstanding defensive player) after totaling 9.5 sacks.Â
Mohamed Ibrahim was honored with the Bruce Smith Award (outstanding offensive player). Ibrahim rushed for 936 yards (third most ever by a Gopher freshman) and seven touchdowns in nine games.Â
Payton Jordahl won the Bobby Bell Award (outstanding special teams player) after serving as the team's longsnapper. He has snapped 498 times in his career, made 10 tackles and recovered one fumble.Â
Seth Green received the Tony Dungy Character and Community Service Award (great character on and off the field), while the Butch Nash Award (competitive on the field and in the classroom) was presented to Academic All-Americans Payton Jordahl, Gary Moore and Same Renner.Â
The Paul Giel Award (unselfishness and most concern for Minnesota) was presented to Emmit Carpenter and the Neil Fredenburg Award (love of the game) went to Thomas Barber for the second straight year.Â
Jacob Huff received the Gary Tinsley Award for best embracing the underdog persona of Gary Tinsley, who played for the Gophers from 2008-11 and passed away in April 2012.Â
The Outstanding Offensive Freshman of the Year award was presented to Rashod Bateman and Daniel Faalele, while Esezi Otomewo and Terell Smith were recognized as Outstanding Defensive Freshman of the Year.
The Offensive Scout Team Player of the Year was Brevyn Spann-Ford, while Mayan Ahanotu was honored as Defensive Scout Team Player of the Year. The Special Teams Scout Player of the Year was awarded to Preston Jelen.Â
Jared Weyler received the Offensive Trench Award (best offensive lineman) and Carter Coughlin received the Defensive Trench Award (best defensive lineman).
Blaise Andries and Sam Renner received the R.T.B Trust Award and Julian Huff, Calvin Swenson, Justus Harris, Jordan Howden, Mariano Sori-Marin were recognized as Quad Team Members, who played on all four special teams.
