MINNEAPOLIS - No. 21/20 Minnesota heads to The Golden State looking to extend their five game winning streak at the San Diego Classic this weekend. The Gophers are set to play five games in the span of three days including two top-25 matchups. The Maroon and Gold are scheduled to take on Oregon State, San Diego State, No. 22 Long Beach State, No. 3/3 UCLA and Colorado State.
Underclassmen lead the charge at the plate where four of the top five hitters are underclassmen. Sophomore MaKenna Partain leads the team with a .417 batting average with freshman Ellee Jensen right behind her hitting .382.
NEARLY A NO-NO
Sophomore right-handers Amber Fiser and Carlie Brandt took no-hitters into the sixth inning Saturday afternoon at the Citrus Classic. Against Bradley, Fiser surrendered a leadoff single in the sixth to break up the no-no. Fiser allowed just one more hit in the seventh before capturing the complete game shutout. Brandt against Lehigh surrendered her first hit to the leadoff batter in the sixth inning after retiring 15 of the first 18 hitters.
SUGAR WE'RE GOING DOWN SWINGING
Amber Fiser was feeling it in the circle this weekend. In four starts, Fiser struck out 24 batters with 17 via the swing and a miss. She also recorded nine strikeouts against Duke and Bradley which is one shy of matching her career-high that she set earlier in the year against Creighton.
WAVE GOODBYE TO IT
The returning All-American Kendyl Lindaman launched a pair of home runs this past weekend at the Citrus Classic bringing her season total to five. That mark currently ranks as the 16th most in the NCAA and tied for first in the Big Ten.
SHE GONE!
Amber Fiser's team-leading 58 strikeouts leads all Big Ten pitchers this season. The mark also ranks as the 20th in the NCAA Division I. Fiser currently records 6.9 strikeouts per seven innings.
FRESHMEN, FRESHMEN DO SOMETHING CRAZY
Newcomer Alex Velazquez notched her first collegiate hit Friday afternoon against No. 22 Kentucky and it could not have come at a better time. Velazquez's double down the right field line scored the Gophers' only two runs that gave them a Top-25 win to open up the weekend.
ODDLY FANTASTIC
It is no coincidence the Gophers have scored 11 of their 69 runs in the first inning, as the experienced offensive team is out scoring their opponents. Coincidence or not though, the Gophers have scored double-digit runs in every odd numbered inning they have played in this season scoring a season inning-best 16 runs in the seventh.
INSIDE THE SERIES: OREGON STATE
The Gophers broke a five game losing streak to the Beavers in last year's meeting with a 6-0 win. Minnesota has won just three of the last 10 meetings between the teams.
INSIDE THE SERIES: SAN DIEGO STATE
Friday evening's nightcap will be the first meeting between the two teams since 2007 when the Gophers lost 1-0.
INSIDE THE SERIES: LONG BEACH STATE
The Gophers have dropped all but one meeting with Long Beach State. The last win for the Gophers over the Dirtbags came on Feb. 21 1993 in shutout fashion, 2-0.
INSIDE THE SERIES: UCLA
Minnesota will be in search of its first-ever program win over UCLA. The Gophers have been shutout in each meeting with the Bruins with the last meeting coming on May 22, 1999.
INSIDE THE SERIES: COLORADO STATE
In a fairly even affair, the teams have split their last four meetings as the Gophers are currently on a two-game winning streak against the Rams. Meeting up last season, Minnesota won 5-1 in the team's third game of the year.
