Gophers Welcome Two B1G Teams to Baseline

The University of Minnesota women's tennis team (9-6, 1-0 Big Ten) returns to Big Ten action this weekend against Maryland (6-5, 0-0 Big Ten) on Friday and Rutgers (5-4, 0-0 Big Ten) on Sunday.

The Gophers will take on Maryland at 3:00 p.m. on Friday and then Rutgers at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday at Baseline Tennis Center. Last season, Minnesota fell 5-2 to Maryland in College Park but obtained a 6-1 win over Rutgers in Piscataway.

LAST TIME OUT - FLORIDA GULF COAST and NOTRE DAME

The Gophers weren't able to pick up a victory in their trip to Fort Myers, Fla. last weekend in a pair of tough matchups. They fell to Florida Gulf Coast 4-3 in their opening match. The loss was the fifth time this season the team has lost a 4-3 match. Against Notre Dame, head coach Catrina Thompson's alma mater, the team couldn't quite find their footing, and fell 6-1 with Caitlyn Merzbacher picking up the lone victory in singles to continue her strong season.

HOME SWEET HOME

Thus far this season, the Gophers are 8-1 at Baseline Tennis Center, with their latest win being over rival Wisconsin two weeks ago. The team will look to continue that this weekend against their pair of Big Ten foes.

ABOUT MARYLAND

The Terrapins bring in a record of 6-5 this season, and their match with the Gophers will be their Big Ten opener. The team is currently on a three match winning streak with victories over Columbia, West Virginia and Marshall. Eva Alexandrova, who is 7-2 in singles this season in the No. 1 position, is the leader for the team thus far this season. The team also has a strong No. 2 and No. 3 spot in Ekaterina Tour and Millie Stretton who have 5-2 and 7-1 records respectively.

ABOUT RUTGERS

Rutgers enters with a 5-4 team record, with a 1-3 record on the road this season. In their last three matches, the team has gone 1-2, with a win against Georgia Southern in their last outing. The leader on the court this season has been Jaci Cochrane who is 6-3 in duals this season. She plays in the No. 4 position, and is 7-3 in her last 10 matches. The dual with the Gophers will be their second match of the weekend as the Scarlet Knights head to Madison to take on the Badgers on Friday afternoon.
