GopherSports.com: What are your summer plans? Internship? Travel? Playing Soccer?

Emily Heslin: For the month of May, I will be studying abroad in Australia. Prior to Australia, I will be traveling to Thailand for a week with a couple of my classmates! Internship plans are still up in the air. I will also be playing for the Twin Cities Fire soccer team in the WPSL, along with a few other of my Gopher teammates.

GS: Heading out of school for a few months, what do you like to do with your free time? Hobbies? Interests?

EH: I love to spend time with my teammates and family. With my extended family specifically, I spend a lot of time at our family house swimming and doing other summer activities. I don't have many hobbies, but like to paint my nails routinely and I shop too much.

GS: How did you begin playing soccer? What sparked your interest as a child?

EH: I started playing soccer when I was 4 or 5 years old, and I think my mom signed me up to allow me to run around and get some of my energy out. From the day I started, I loved it more than any other sport I played.

GS: What other positions have you played in the past? For instance… if you were a goal scorer in high school, and you are not now, what has that position change been like? Or vice versa…

EH: I have pretty much been a center midfielder my entire life…I switch from defensive mid to attacking mid on occasion. I also have been thrown into the backline a few times over my Gopher soccer career, which is always an adventure.

GS: What kind of person would you describe yourself as? What kind of player would you describe yourself as?

EH: I would describe myself as an extremely hardworking, organized, and loyal person. I would describe myself similarly as a soccer player with the addition of being EXTREMELY competitive.

GS: Have you played other sports in your life?

EH: Track, basketball, volleyball

GS: Is there a story behind your number you have in college? What about what you had in high school?

EH: I had been 23 my entire life, but that number was taken when I came in so I just sort of randomly picked 10 and I love it!

GS: What made you choose to come to the University of Minnesota? What does it mean to be a Gopher to you?

EH: I loved the people, the culture, and of course, the soccer. I was immediately intrigued by the family-feel I felt when I visited and I knew I wanted to play in a Power Five conference, making Minnesota the perfect fit for me. I also enjoy being close to home so I can see my family often.

GS: What is your favorite part about playing soccer here?

EH: The people and the competitiveness that comes with everything we do

GS: Favorite Soccer player? Favorite Professional athlete?

EH: Favorite soccer player: Tobin Heath

GS: Favorite food/meal?

EH: Any dessert besides cheesecake

GS: Favorite Sport besides soccer?

EH: Love to watch hockey

GS: Favorite place you have traveled to?

EH: Italy, London, hopefully I love Australia/Thailand, and Jamaica

GS: Favorite _____ (You pick something!)

EH: Nail polish color: Essie: Mrs. Always Right

GS: Favorite _____ (You pick something!)

EH: Tv show: Survivor…my goal in life is to go on the show someday!
