Lockard Earns Bid for NCAA Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif – High jumper Ryan Lockard highlighted the final day of competition at the 2018 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field West Preliminary for the University of Minnesota men’s track & field program by earning a bid to next month’s national championships in Oregon.
A two-time All-American in the indoor high jump, Lockard punched his ticket to the NCAA championships with a fifth-place showing at Hornet Stadium on Saturday. His height of 2.16 meters (7-01 ft.) marks his second best performance of the season this year.
Lockard joins Obsa Ali and Kieran McKeag as Minnesota’s NCAA championships contingency. Ali broke a nearly 47-year old school record and ran the NCAA’s fastest 3,000 meter steeplechase (8:36.49) on Friday while McKeag hit a personal record in the hammer throw (63.97 meters, 209-10 ft.) on Thursday.
Meanwhile, a number of Gophers closed out their seasons on Saturday. In the field events, Jonathan Tharaldsen was one spot away from advancing to the national championships, finishing 13th in the shot put at 18.49 meters (60-08 ft.) while Sammie Houston came in 43rd in the triple jump at 14.45 meters (47-05 ft.). On the track, the 4x400 meter relay of Jonathan Webb, Ben Psicihulis, Matthew Baker and Jackson Wellenstein finished 14th at 3:06.25 while Shane Streich came in 20th in the 1,500 meter quarterfinals at 3:47.78.
The 2018 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships are scheduled for June 6-9 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
