Gopher great will be inducted into the M Club Hall of Fame in September
Former University of Minnesota running back Laurence Maroney was named today a member of the 2018 M Club Hall of Fame class. The St. Louis native is one of nine former Gophers who will be formally inducted into the Hall on Sept. 13, 2018.
Maroney was one of the best to ever wear the Maroon and Gold. He ranks second all-time in rushing yards (3,933) and 100-yard games (21) and fifth in touchdowns (32) despite playing only three seasons at Minnesota. Maroney is the only Gopher to rush for 10-plus touchdowns in three straight seasons and owns three of the seven longest runs (93 yards, 80 yards and 80 yards) in school history.
Maroney's tenure in Dinkytown was so dominant that he is the only Gopher in school history to rank in the top five in yards by a freshman, sophomore and junior. His 1,121 yards as a freshmen rank second and so do his 1,348 yards as a sophomore. Maroney's 1,464 yards as a junior rank first by class and rank second all-time in school history.
Maroney owns the two-longest streaks (seven and six games) in school history for consecutive 100-yard games and is tied for the school record with three 200-yard games. He averaged a head-turning 5.96 yards per carry, which ranks fourth in school history. However, Maroney had 340 more carries than anyone in the top three and his 660 career carries (tied for third in school history) are the most for anyone in the top 10 by 85 carries.
Maroney was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2003, First Team All-Big Ten in 2004 and 2005 and First Team All-America in 2005. He was selected No. 21 in the 2006 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots and would play five seasons in the NFL between the Patriots (2006-09) and Denver Broncos (2010).
