Strandemo Makes USATF Debut

DES MOINES, Iowa – University of Minnesota alumna Madeline Strandemo made her first career appearance racing at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a 17th-place showing in the 3,000m steeplechase at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa, on Thursday.

Strandemo posted a time of 10:05.32, good for eighth place in her heat, which was won by 2017 world champion and 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Emma Coburn (New Balance) in 9:48.79.

Courtney Frerichs (Nike/Bowerman TC) led the preliminary heats with a time of 9:42.02. The top five times in each of two heats plus the next four fastest times advanced to Saturday's final. The field saw 23 athletes compete.

Action at the USA Outdoor Championships continues through Sunday. Fellow Gopher alum Emma Spagnola is set to race in the first round of the 400m hurdles at 3:03 p.m. CT Saturday.
