Haley Hartkemeyer sat down with GopherSports.com to give fans a chance to get to know more about her on and off the field!
As the University of Minnesota soccer team gears up for another season, GopherSports.com sat down with each player on the 2018 team to get to know them better on and off the field!
Haley Hartkemeyer was the next to sit down with GopherSports.com to get to know her more on and off the field!
GopherSports.com: What are your summer plans? Internship? Travel? Playing Soccer? ANYTHING!
Haley Hartkemeyer: I plan on staying in Minneapolis this summer working for a program called Skyhawks. I will be coaching little kids a variety of sports, including soccer!
GS: Heading out of school for a few months, what do you like to do with your free time? Hobbies? Interests?
HH: Spending time with friends and family back home, trying to get as much time boating and on the lake as I can, rollerblading, and being with my teammates!
GS: How did you begin playing soccer? What sparked your interest as a child?
HH: I started when I was about 5 years old and fell in love right away. I live right behind my home soccer park so it was something I was able to do every single day and loved it!
GS: What other positions have you played in the past? For instance… if you were a goal scorer in high school, and you are not now, what has that position change been like? Or vice versa…
HH: Ever since I started playing I switched between any midfield or forward position, but just this year I've started training at defense! It's quite the position change from what I'm used to but I'm excited to try something new and really test myself!
GS: What kind of person would you describe yourself as? What kind of player would you describe yourself as?
HH: As a person I would describe myself as goofy and almost always happy. As a player, I would say I'm determined in anything I set my mind to and I'm always looking for a challenge.
GS: Have you played other sports in your life?
HH: When I was younger I tried out figure skating, gymnastics, and basketball. I obviously didn't have the height for basketball so that didn't last long. Figure skating was too cold, and gymnastics was too bendy! I also ran cross country throughout high school.
GS: Is there a story behind your number you have in college? What about what you had in high school?
HH: I have always had an odd number (11 or 13 for a while) but when I came to Minnesota I was given 26 and it has really grown on me!
GS: What made you choose to come to the University of Minnesota? What does it mean to be a Gopher to you?
HH: I chose Minnesota because it was somewhere that I knew would make me happy. I spent a semester at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse and that really made me realize what I wanted, and that was to be a gopher! It means a lot for me to be a Gopher because of how much hard work and dedication it took for me to get to where I am now and to be genuinely happy!
GS: What is your favorite part about playing soccer here?
HH: My teammates. They make everything about the soccer piece so much more fun and are great people to spend time with out of soccer as well.
