Clunis Represents Jamaica at Athletics World Cup

Nayoka Clunis competed in hammer throw at the inaugural Athletics World Cup over the weekend

LONDON -- University of Minnesota rising senior Nayoka Clunis represented her native Jamaica at the inaugural Athletics World Cup over the weekend. Clunis placed eighth in hammer throw and Jamaica placed fourth in the team standings as Clunis made her debut with the national team at the London Stadium.

Clunis threw 56.36m (184-11), improving on each of her first three throws before fouling on her fourth and final attempt. World record-holder Anita Wlodarczyk of Poland won the hammer throw competition with a mark of 78.74m (258-04). Clunis earned a place on Jamaica's national team for the Athletics World Cup after winning the Jamaican national title in hammer throw with a mark of 57.83m at the Jamaica National Senior Championships. She also finished third in shot put (15.48m) and took sixth in discus (49.47m) at the national meet. The Kingston, Jamaica, native wrapped up her first season competing for the Maroon & Gold as a two-time All-American, earning Second Team honors in the weight throw indoors and hammer throw outdoors.

The U.S. won the inaugural Athletics World Cup with 219 points ahead of runner-up Poland (162 points) and Great Britain and Northern Ireland in third with 155 points. Jamaica came in fourth (153 points), followed by France (146), South Africa (135), and China (81).

A new competition this year, the Athletics World Cup featured the world's top eight track & field nations in the United States, Great Britain & Northern Ireland, Poland, China, Germany, France, Jamaica, and South Africa. It included all track events up to and including the 1500m along with all field events.
