Gopher Olympians Collect More Honors

The Olympic gold medalist U.S. women's hockey team was named 2018 Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year and won an ESPY this week.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The six gold medalist Gopher Olympians and the rest of the U.S. women's hockey team were honored as the 2018 Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year and won the ESPY for Best Game as the team took part in two events in Los Angeles hosted by ESPN this week.
The U.S. women's national team received the 2018 Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year award at the fourth annual Sports Humanitarian Awards, presented by ESPN, at The Novo in Los Angeles. The Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year represents a sports club/team that demonstrates how teamwork can create a measurable impact on a community or cause.
The U.S. Women's National Team has remained committed to growing the game of hockey by sharing the love for the game with young hockey players around the country and paving the way for the next generation of female hockey players. Throughout the 2017-18 season, the USWNT hosted girls hockey clinics in multiple different markets and took every opportunity to meet with young girls and share words of wisdom and inspiration.
The team also attended the 2018 ESPY Awards, where they were nominated for Best Olympic Moment, Best Game, Best Team, and Best Play and took home the award for Best Game in celebration of their 3-2 shootout victory over Canada in the gold-medal game at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. The ESPYS (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly) is an annual award show that honors sports and athletic achievement, both on an individual and team basis.
