Gophers Projected to Finish Sixth in Big Ten

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference released the preseason coaches' poll Monday morning where the Gophers were selected to finish sixth among the 14 teams. Along with the ranking, the conference unveiled the 2018 Big Ten Preseason Honors List, as selected by the conference coaches.
Seniors April Bockin, Molly Fiedler and Emily Heslin found their names among the 42 student-athletes selected to the Preseason Honors List. All three earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition last season, while Bockin and Fiedler earned the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award.
Bockin achieved her All-Big Ten third team honor last season by leading not only the Big Ten in assists with 12, but the entire NCAA at the end of the regular season. The Eden Prairie, Minn. native netted four goals last season and scored two goals last Wednesday in the Gophers exhibition matchup against Kansas State. Her career 20 assists is currently tied for eighth all-time in Gopher history.
Fiedler earned All-Big Ten Second Team honors during the 2017 campaign. The Eagan, Minn. native has started in all 65 matches in her career. She ranked second in the Big Ten in assist with eight following the regular season while adding a goal.
Heslin, a 2018 captain, returns with Fiedler as one of the Gophers most experienced midfielders. Heslin has appeared in all 65 games of her career adding five goals and two assists. Last season Heslin netted three goals while assisting on two.
Penn State is the top choice to win the 2018 Big Ten Conference while Ohio State, Rutgers, Northwestern and Wisconsin round out the top five. Minnesota this season will face Penn State on the road (Oct. 21) and will host Rutgers (Sept. 30), Northwestern (Sept. 16) and Wisconsin (Oct. 13).
