Temi Ogunrinde finished as hammer throw runner-up at the 2018 African Athletics Championships.

MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota senior Temi Ogunrinde set a new Nigerian national record and placed second in the hammer throw while competing for Team Nigeria at the 2018 African Athletics Championships in Asaba, Delta State, Nigeria.

Ogunrinde recorded a throw of 67.39m (221-01) on her fourth attempt to seal her second-place finish. The mark was just two inches shy of her career-best mark of 67.45m (221-03), which she set at the Mt. SAC Relays during the 2018 season. Entering the competition, Ogunrinde was the top-ranked hammer thrower in all of Africa; Soukaina Zakour of Morocco used a career-best throw of 68.28m (224-00) on her first attempt to win gold at the meet.

The competition marked Ogunrinde's first meet representing Nigeria as she joined Queen Obisesan and Sofiat Omizi to make up Nigeria's hammer throwers as named by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) for the 21st African Athletics Championships. With her runner-up finish, Ogunrinde secured her place representing Africa at the 2018 IAAF Continental Cup in Ostrava, Czech Republic in September as well.

Ogunrinde's impressive season continues after she also repeated as the Big Ten Conference champion in hammer throw and earned Second Team All-America honors during the 2018 collegiate season.
