Fleck names walk-on true freshman starting quarterback
Minnesota football coach P.J. Fleck named Zack Annexstad the starting quarterback today. Annexstad and the Gophers begin the season at 6 p.m. on Aug. 30 against New Mexico State at TCF Bank Stadium.
Annexstad is a walk-on true freshman quarterback who joined the Gophers in January after enrolling early from IMG Academy in Florida. Annexstad is believed to be the second walk-on true freshman quarterback to start a season opener, joining Baker Mayfield who started his first game at Texas Tech in 2013 after walking on.
Annexstad completed 63-of-112 passes for 940 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior at IMG. He finished his career with 1,137 passing yards and 14 touchdowns.
Annexstad is from Noresland, Minn., and his brother Brock is a redshirt freshman receiver for the Gophers. His father, Scott, played at Minnesota from 1982-83 and then saw time with Kansas City and Washington in the NFL.
