Gophers Receiving Votes in United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll

KANSAS CITY – The University of Minnesota soccer team will begin the 2018 season receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll. The Gophers return five starters to the pitch along with 16 letterwinners and seven newcomers.

Minnesota hits the pitch for the first time this season on Wednesday, Aug. 8 at 7 p.m. as they take on Kansas State in an exhibition match in Manhattan, Kan. The Maroon and Gold return home on Saturday, Aug. 11 as they take on South Dakota State in exhibition play at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium at 6 p.m. Admission is free to Saturday's home match.

Stanford University came out on top as the No. 1 team in the polls after receiving 34 first place votes. The Cardinals, who went 22-1 last season and are the defending national champions, will make their appearance in the Twin Cities for the first time on Sunday, Sept. 2.

Other Gopher opponents in the preseason top-25 include Penn State (4), Washington State (21) and Rutgers (24). Opponents receiving votes along with the Gophers were Ole Miss, Northwestern and Wisconsin.
