Max McHugh Named to USA Swimming’s National Junior Team

Colorado Springs, Colo. – Minnesota Gopher freshman Max McHugh was among the 67 swimmers named to the USA Swimming National Junior Team today.

McHugh most recently represented the Gophers at the USA Swimming National Championships in Irvine, Calif. The Sturgeon Bay, Wisc., native set two personal records at the meet and walked away with an 18 & under National Championship in the 50-meter breast with a time of 27.66.

Prior to nationals, McHugh won WIAA Boys Division 2 State Championships in the 50-yard free and the 100-Y breaststroke. In 2017 McHugh was a two-time YMCA Short Course National Champion in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke and a three-time champion at the YMCA Long Course National Championships in the 50, 100 and 200-meter breaststroke events.

The National Junior Team is selected based upon performance criteria where an athlete is one of the top-two individuals in each Olympic event or is one of the top-four ranked athletes in the 100 and 200-meter freestyle. Additional spots may be selected for any male athlete that is  ranked within the top-100 globally for an Olympic event.

The Gophers begin their season on Sept. 28, hosting their annual Alumni Meet at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
