2018 Week 4 Roundup

9/19/2018 4:47:00 PM | Football

Each week we will be gathering the top notes and clips from media availability. Take a look below:

Certified Star

Through three games this season, Tyler Johnson has hauled in 20 balls for 283 yards and five scores. Johnson has 69 career catches for 1,101 yards (24th in school history) and 13 touchdowns (tied for 11th all-time).

Coach Fleck said that the rest of the supporting cast around Johnson has to continue to grow and learn from him.

"You're still looking in the eyes of these 18-year-old kids that are here, that are true freshmen or redshirt freshmen that are playing for the first time," Fleck said. "If we can continue to develop the supporting cast around him, it's only going to make Tyler better. But more opportunities for those young guys, they've got to earn. They've got to continue to earn that from game to game. It's rare that you see Ty Johnson have 130, 130, 140, 160, and minus 8. That's not how it goes."

Special Brotherhood

Emmit Carpenter is poised to become one of the most productive kickers in school history. The senior, who was one of 30 kickers named to the preseason watch list for the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, has made 41-of-50 career field goals. His 82.0 field goal conversion rate ranks first in program history.

"First of all, Emmit Carpenter is one of the best people you ever meet in your entire life," head coach P.J. Fleck said. "He can kick and do all these things. He's one of the leaders in all of our community service, not because he has to do, but because he wants to do it. He thrives in that. He's going to make his company, he's going to make his family, he's going to make anybody who comes around him in his future better. He's going to make everybody better around him, and that's what he's continued to do."

Carpenter is always quick to add praise to long snapper Payton Jordahl and holder Jacob Herbers. The three of them have been starting together for the past three seasons.

"The relationship and the chemistry is huge. I would say very confidently that there are very few people in the world I trust as much as Jacob Herbers," Carpenter said. "Of course you can't leave Payton Jordahl out of the equation. Payton is so good at what he does that it's gotten to a point where (Herbers) rarely has to spin the ball now. He just catches it and sets it down because the laces are perfect.

Herbers had a big day last Saturday outside of holding. He pinned Miami inside the 20-yard line four times including three inside the 10 at the 3,2 and 8-yard lines.

Green Line

Seth Green rushed for two touchdowns out of the Wildcat formation against the Aggies and again rushed for two scores and converted a two-point try to Ko Kieft against Fresno State. Green then tossed his first career touchdown - a 7-yard strike to Johnson - against Miami. The new wrinkle has caught people's attention. You can find out more about him on this week's "Pick 6" Instagram story feature as well as on the P.J. Fleck Show on Fox 9 this evening at 10:30 p.m.

TCF Bank Stadium was full of big names last weekend. We loved having so many great alumni in the house.
