Big Ten Names Basten Athlete of the Week

MINNEAPOLIS – University of Minnesota redshirt sophomore Alec Basten has been named the Big Ten Cross Country Athlete of the Week after picking up his first career win and helping Minnesota to its second team victory of the year last Saturday at Nebraska's Greeno/Dirksen Invite.
A native of Green Bay, Wis., Basten notched a personal eight-kilometer record of 24:17.5 to pace the field at Mahoney Golf Course last weekend in his first race of the year for the Maroon & Gold. Behind Basten's individual crown, Minnesota cruised to the team title with 33 points – the Gophers have won both of their meets this year after opening the 2018 cross country campaign with a title at the Oz Memorial earlier this month.
The Maroon & Gold will take a week away from competition before hosting the 33rd annual Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 29 at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn.
