Gophers Ready to Host Wisconsin Wednesday

GOPHERS SET TO FACE WISCONSIN
The University of Minnesota hosts border rival No. 5 Wisconsin, Wednesday night at 8 p.m. It marks the first meeting between the two teams, but Wisconsin's second visit to Minneapolis this season as the Badgers competed in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge the opening weekend of the season, Aug. 24-25.

GOPHERS' LAST ACTION
Minnesota defeated Maryland in straight sets (25-19, 25-19, 25-18) last Saturday. With the win, the Gophers improved to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten. Stephanie Samedy led the team with 13 kills and hit .310. She was followed by Adanna Rollins, who posted her second double-double of the week with 11 kills and a team-high 15 digs. Alexis Hart and Taylor Morgan each contributed nine kills.

Wisconsin enters the match with a 9-1 overall record and are 2-0 in the Big Ten. The Badgers' five game win streak includes two sweeps against Ohio State and Rutgers in the opening weekend of Big Ten play. Dana Rettke leads the Big Ten and second nationally in blocks per set averaging 1.83. TRIO OF GOPHERS RECEIVE B1G LAURELS
Stephanie Samedy, Samantha Seliger-Swenson and Adanna Rollins have received weekly Big Ten Conference awards after sweeping its competition the opening weekend of Big Ten play. Samedy was named Co-Big Ten Player of the Week, Seliger-Swenson received Setter of the Week honors and Rollins was named Co-Freshman of the Week. It's the first honor for all three of them in the 2018 season. Samedy contributed 33 points and averaged 4.50 kills per set as the Golden Gophers earned a pair of sweeps over No. 4 Penn State and Maryland, Wednesday and Saturday night. Seliger-Swenson averaged 11.83 assists per set in the opening weekend of Big Ten play. She also amassed 24 digs. Rollins averaged 4.00 kills per set, hit .266 and added 26 digs in her first weekend of Big Ten play and tabulated two double-doubles.
SAMEDY NAMED NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Stephanie Samedy was named the Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week after a stellar weekend against Penn State and Maryland. Samedy becomes the first Golden Gopher to receive the award since Sarah Wilhite garnered the honor in 2016. Samedy becomes just the ninth player in Golden Gopher history to be named the AVCA National Player of the Week, dating back to 1996.

FRESHMEN IMPACT
Minnesota has two freshmen who are making their mark already this season in outside hitter Adanna Rollins and libero CC McGraw. Both have see action in 33 sets for the Golden Gophers and have started in all 10 matches. Rollins averages 2.12 kills per set, while McGraw averages 3.76 digs per set in their young Gophers careers.

For the second straight week, Minnesota is ranked No. 7 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). In all, seven Big Ten Conference teams are ranked in the top 25: Nebraska (3), Wisconsin (5), Minnesota (6), Illinois (7), Penn State (9), Purdue (16), and Michigan (17). Michigan State is receiving votes. Two non-conference opponents are also ranked in No. 2 Stanford and No. 12 Oregon.
