Senior excels on and off the field for the Golden Gophers

University of Minnesota kicker Emmit Carpenter has been named a semifinalist for the Senior Class Award. He is one of 30 NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision semifinalists recognized for excelling on and off the field.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I FBS senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.

Carpenter is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree (2016, 2017) and a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree (2016, 2017). He earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honors in 2017 as well.

He received the team's Tony Dungy Character and Community Service Award (great character on and off the field) in 2017 and was also a nominee for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

In his limited free time, Carpenter can often be found at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital visiting with patients. Along with the specialists, he has used his platform with the Gopher Specialists Twitter account to put on the "Can O'Corn Food Drive" and "A Very Specialist Holiday Season." Through their efforts, they were able to take donations that went toward Thanksgiving meals and buying toys for the Children's Hospital.

Carpenter has made 43-of-52 career field goals and his 82.6 field goal conversion rate ranks first in program history (minimum 25 attempts). He has made 7-of-8 field goals this year and his 43 career field goals rank fourth in program history. Carpenter has made 85-of-86 career point-after attempts and has made 48 consecutive entering the Oct. 6 game against Iowa. He has 214 career points, which ranks him fifth among kickers all time and seventh among all players.

To determine the final Senior CLASS Award winner, the 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. Along with the winner, the 10 finalists will be awarded Senior CLASS Award first- or second-team honors.

The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the football bowl season in early January. For more information on the candidates, visit seniorCLASSaward.com.
