Gopher alumnae Winny Brodt Brown and Chelsey Brodt Rosenthal have signed NWHL contracts.
MINNEAPOLIS --Â Gopher alumnae Winny Brodt Brown and Chelsey Brodt Rosenthal have signed contracts with the National Women's Hockey League's Minnesota Whitecaps for the 2018-19 season, the NWHL announced Wednesday.
An original member of the Minnesota Whitecaps, Brown played for the Gophers during the 1998-99, 1999-00, and 2002-03 seasons. In 96 career games, she totaled 134 career points with 41 goals and 93 assists. She was named the 2000 WCHA Defensive Player of the Year and a Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award finalist and led the Gophers to the 2000 AWCHA national championship. Brown still ranks second in career points and third in both career goals and assists among all-time Gopher defense. Brown was the first-ever winner of the Minnesota Ms. Hockey Award and was a member of the U.S. National Team program for a decade. The Roseville, Minn., native began her college career at New Hampshire, where she won the inaugural AWCHA national championship in the 1997-98 season. In February 2018, she served as a coach at the NWHL All-Star Game in Saint Paul, Minn.
Rosenthal played for the Gophers from 2002-03 to 2005-06, recording 43 career points on seven goals and 36 assists in 151 games. A defenseman from Roseville, Minn., she helped the Gophers advance to four-straight NCAA Frozen Fours and was part of back-to-back NCAA national championship teams, along with winning two WCHA regular-season and tournament titles, in 2004 and 2005. Rosenthal served as an assistant captain as a senior, helping the Gophers to a 29-11-1 overall record and an NCAA runner-up showing in 2005-06. She was a three-time WCHA All-Academic honoree.
Brown and Rosenthal join fellow Golden Gopher alumnae Hannah Brandt, Jordyn Burns, Dani Cameranesi, Amanda Kessel, Amanda Leveille, Gigi Marvin, Kate Schipper, and Lee Stecklein in the NWHL for the 2018-19 season. The Whitecaps open the season at home against the Metropolitan Riveters on Saturday, Oct. 6.
