MINNEAPOLIS – With the season fast approaching, the University of Minnesota is inviting fans to a new Countdown to Puck Drop fan event on Friday, Sept. 21 as the Gopher men's and women's programs head into the 2018-19 campaign.
The kickoff event, hosted at 3M Arena at Mariucci, is free to all fans from 6 p.m. CT until 8 p.m.
Student-Athletes and coaches from both Gopher programs will be in attendance for autographs and photos while fans will also be able to tour the locker room areas of Ridder Arena and 3M Arena at Mariucci. Fans can also skate with Goldy and the Gopher Hockey cheerleaders on the freshly frozen ice during an open skate session at 3M Arena at Mariucci. Additional information will be announced as the event approaches.
Fans interested in attending the Countdown to Puck Drop event are directed to park in Lot 37 and enter 3M Arena at Mariucci through East entrance (facing TCF Bank Stadium).
The 98th season of Gopher men's hockey will see the Maroon & Gold take the ice for the first time under new head coach Bob Motzko, who returns to the University of Minnesota after helping the program claim back-to-back national championships in 2002 and 2003 as an assistant coach. Minnesota opens the season against the defending national champions in Minnesota Duluth with a home-and-home series (Oct. 6-7). Along with the sixth year of Big Ten Conference play, the 2018-19 season includes an 11-game non-conference schedule, highlighted by the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game against North Dakota at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, Oct. 27.
The Gopher women's hockey team opens its 22nd season with an exhibition game against the University of British Columbia followed by a 34-game regular-season campaign as the team is in search of an NCAA Women's Frozen Four berth and the program's eighth national title. Minnesota's non-conference slate features series with Mercyhurst, Robert Morris, and Yale along with a trip to Burlington, Vt., for the Windjammer Classic with St. Lawrence, Syracuse, and host Vermont. Minnesota hosts British Columbia in exhibition action on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 4 p.m. CT.
